Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis

A range of treatments to solve the problem of excessive sweating.

It’s normal to sweat if you get hot from heat or exercise, but you may be sweating excessively if you sweat when your body doesn’t need to cool down. This is called hyperhidrosis.

We understand that heavy sweating can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Our consultants can offer treatments that can provide a solution to excessive sweating and help you to keep the condition under control.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms caused from Hyperhidrosis are excessive sweating in your underarms, hands, feet or face.

What are the causes?

Hyperhidrosis is caused by a problem in the nervous system which triggers sweat glands to help your body cool down when you’re hot, and as a result, they become overactive.

There are two types of Hyperhidrosis: Primary hyperhidrosis which there is no medical cause and can be hereditary, and Secondary hyperhidrosis, which is caused by underlying medical conditions such as neurological syndromes, menopause, diabetes or thyroid problems. Secondary hyperhidrosis can also be caused from certain medications, such as pain relief, antidepressants or hormonal treatments.

What treatments are there?

Depending on which part of the body the excessive sweating occurs, we can offer the below treatments to help you find a solution. All patients will be invited for an initial consultant prior to any commencement of treatment so our consultants can make an informed decision about which option is right for you.

Sweaty armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis)

This type of hyperhidrosis is best treated with Botulinum Toxin injections (commonly known as Botox or Dysport) which blocks the nerves that trigger the sweat glands. It is particularly effective when injected through the skin and works by blocking the chemical in the body that stimulates the sweat glands which significantly reduces the amount of sweat produced.

These injections can be done in different ways and each specialist may have their own preference. It may take a few days to notice results and to retain the effect the injections will likely need to be repeated after six months.

Sweaty palms also known as dripping palms (palmar hyperhidrosis)

This condition is usually treated with Thoracoscopic Sympathectomy, a surgical treatment which is done under general anaesthetic. During the keyhole surgery the surgeon removes a small section of the autonomic nerves that control sweating in your hands.

Thoracoscopic sympathectomy carries a small risk of side effects (compensatory sweating elsewhere) and complications (Horner syndrome, also known as droopy eyelid) which our consultants will discuss with you in more detail during your consultation.

Excessive facial blushing

This problem can be very distressing, especially in adolescents and young adults. This condition is also treated by Thoracoscopic sympathectomy.
