Electromyography and nerve conduction studies
Muscle and nerve disorders can often be troubling or painful, but with the help of a diagnosis through electromyography and nerve conduction studies, we can offer the right treatment for you.
Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are used to help diagnose a variety of muscle and nerve disorders by measuring the electrical activity of muscles and nerves. An EMG test helps find out if muscles are responding the right way to nerve signals and nerve conduction studies help diagnose nerve damage or disease.
What can EMG and NCS diagnose?
EMG and NCS can help diagnose neuromuscular diseases, such as muscular dystrophy, nerve problems in the spine, such as a herniated disk, and nerve problems elsewhere in the body, such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
How do the tests work?
An EMG looks at the electrical signals your muscles make when they are at rest and when they are being used, and a nerve conduction study measures how fast and how well the body's electrical signals travel down your nerves. They can be done separately, but they are usually done at the same time. When they are done together, it helps the consultant determine if your symptoms are caused by a muscle disorder or a nerve problem.
Where are the tests carried out?
Following an improvement in our diagnostic facilities locally, this service is now offered on island at the Medical Specialist Group.
Can I refer myself?
Yes, you do not need to be referred by another healthcare professional.
When will the results be available?
The results will be available immediately after the test and will allow your consultant to make an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan for you.
How much do the tests cost?
This service costs £505 and is not covered by the States contract, so either you or your health insurer will need to pay. Always check first with your health insurer whether your policy covers this treatment and obtain a pre-authorisation code.
