Understanding our billing process for private medical insurance

Depending on the terms of your policy, your insurers may cover some or all the costs of your treatment. Any service that is not covered (in part or in full) will be your financial responsibility.

If you provide us with your full insurance details, including your membership number and authorisation details (if applicable), we can submit an invoice directly to your insurers on your behalf for all the services provided.

The insurance company then processes the invoice and reimburses the MSG directly.

If your insurer doesn’t cover all the costs, they may let you know that a contribution is required from you. In this case, we’ll send you an invoice for any amount that hasn’t been covered, so you’re clear about what you need to pay.  Some insurers may advise that you are not liable for these costs, this is not the case under our billing terms.

In addition, some insurers do not recognise certain consultants within our group. We therefore advise you to check with your insurer and obtain approval to see the consultant before attending your appointment.

Surgical procedures

If you’re undergoing an operation, you will receive two separate quotes:

  • One from us covering the surgeon and anaesthetist fees
  • One from the hospital covering the use of facilities and other related charges

We do have a limited number of procedures that incorporate both ours and HSC fees, but this will be clearly identified in the quote.

We strongly recommend that you contact your insurer in advance to confirm exactly what is covered under your policy, so you’re fully aware of any potential shortfalls before proceeding with treatment.

Insurers we don't work with

Please note that we are unable to deal directly with the following insurers:

  • Vitality
  • BUPA UK

Local insurers

Occasionally patients will provide us with Oddfellows insurance details. Please be aware that treatment provided by the MSG is not covered under Oddfellow policies, therefore all patients are personally responsible for the cost of any private treatment.

Cover for specialist treatment under Foresters is limited to specific items. We therefore recommend that you contact Foresters directly to confirm whether your treatment will be covered before proceeding with treatment.
