Mr Richard HopcroftMB.ChB, DM, FRCS(Ed), FRCS (Tr + Orth) | GMC Number: 4034205
Mr Hopcroft is a hip and knee surgeon who specialises in hip and knee replacement surgery for arthritis, cartilage repair and ligament reconstruction of the knee through arthroscopic or keyhole surgery. Mr Hopcroft joined the MSG in September 2018, from the James Cook University Teaching Hospital. Having been a consultant since 2009, he brings great experience to the department.
Since arriving in Guernsey he has developed an Urgent Knee Clinic for sports injuries as well as Paediatric orthopaedic clinic to allow more patients to receive specialist treatment without the need to travel off island.
Mr Hopcroft undertook medical training at the University of Liverpool Medical School and holds a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Nottingham School of Medicine and Surgical Sciences. He continued his specialist training in a number of UK hospitals and has spent time in world respected clinics in North America and Australia. He is fellowship trained from two centres in Australia in hip and knee reconstruction and sports medicine. He performs primary and revision surgery for hip and knee arthroplasty, including soft tissue knee reconstruction.
Whilst at the James Cook Hospital, Mr. Hopcroft was responsible for developing and introducing the enhanced recovery program in orthopaedics and subsequently wider through the region; for hip and knee replacements. In addition, he was a key contributor to the development of the care pathway for patients with hip fractures, as well as being one of the key providers for children’s orthopaedic surgery in South Tees.
During his time as a consultant Mr. Hopcroft also acted as one of the educational and clinical supervisors for South Tees’ higher specialist trainees and lectured on the regional training program, holding positions on the regional training committee. Whilst leading on a number of audit projects, Mr Hopcroft has also contributed to multiple studies through the research network.
