Mr Benjamin Thomas is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with special interests in advanced key-hole surgery, urogynaecology, and menopause care.
He studied Medical Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge, and graduated from Oxford University Medical School. He trained in obstetrics and gynaecology at several hospitals in London, including the Royal Free Hospital and University College Hospital. He has previously held Consultant appointments at three teaching hospitals in the UK.
Mr Thomas performs advanced key-hole surgery and vaginal surgery which allow a faster recovery and earlier discharge from hospital – and give better cosmetic results – compared with traditional open surgery. He specialises in treating period problems, endometriosis, severe pre-menstrual symptoms, vaginal prolapse, urinary incontinence and over-active bladder in this way.
Soon after his appointment to the MSG in 2016, Mr Thomas introduced key-hole hysterectomy to Guernsey, allowing many more women to benefit from this advanced gynaecological surgery on-island. He also provides a range of options to treat women’s symptoms while preserving or even improving their fertility. He strongly believes in discussing non-operative treatment options with patients before considering surgery.
Mr Thomas set up the private obstetric service for women who value more personal care in their pregnancy. He has an interest in safe childbirth which minimises injury to the pelvic floor, having run courses on this in Cambridge on behalf of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
With his interest in menopause care, Mr Thomas offers the full range of HRT options for women with troublesome symptoms on a private basis. He offers oestrogen and testosterone implants to selected women. He has given several talks on menopause health and HRT to Guernsey businesses, in support of local women’s charity Bright Tights and the UK’s Ovacome. He was recently invited to speak to the Guernsey Menopause Support Group, to a very warm reception!
