After being a regular locum in Guernsey for six years, consultant otorhinolaryngologist Andrew Pelser took up a permanent role at the Medical Specialist Group in November 2023.
He began his studies at medical school in South Africa then worked as a junior doctor in the UK before completing his specialist training back in South Africa.
In 2013 he achieved a Fellowship in Head and Neck Cancer and Thyroid Cancer Surgery at Brighton Sussex University Hospitals and the following year took up a consultant post there where he was the Head and Neck Lead for the ENT department from 2014 to 2023. He also focused on Laryngology (voice).
During Mr Pelser’s time with the Head and Neck cancer team in Brighton, the service went from being ranked the bottom third in the UK to being within the top 10% in just a couple of years.
He says he is also proud of collaborative work with other specialities such as Neurosurgery, Thoracic surgery, Upper gastrointestinal surgery and Vascular surgery which allowed the team to push the boundaries for what could be achieved for complex cancer patients.
There is always the excitement and challenges of surgery, which I love, but the most fulfilling aspect is the long-term relationship I have with patients while helping them through a difficult time.
Outside work, he is a happily married father of two and spends most of his free time with his family. He loves the sea, whether in it or just next to it, and is hoping to install the same love into his children so that they can enjoy it together.
