Consultant physician and nephrologist Dr Patrick Harnett, who joined the MSG in 2021, has extensive experience in both general and renal medicine, caring for patients with complex problems and multiple interacting conditions. Patients with primary and secondary hypertension, diabetic kidney disease, vascular disease and chronic kidney disease have been a particular focus.
He was previously at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where he led the acute medicine department during the pandemic, seeing some of the first patients in the country with Covid. He led the renal unit there for 10 years and developed novel electronic systems for management of chronic kidney disease. The systems prevented patients from deteriorating un-noticed and allowed early management of progressing problems. The unit consistently achieved top results for many areas including patient survival in the national renal registry in the UK.
“I enjoy finding a diagnosis and putting a solution in place. I also enjoy working with a team and fixing problems in a group setting.”
Outside work, Dr Harnett enjoys sport and music and good food.
