Recurrent UTI Clinic

Our Recurrent UTI Clinic provides specialist assessment and treatment options for adults experiencing recurring infections.

Our Recurrent UTI Clinic provides specialist assessment and treatment options for adults experiencing recurring infections.

Most people have a urinary tract infection (UTI) at some point. Usually a short course of antibiotics clears it. However, for some people the infection keeps returning and can have a significant impact on daily life.

Our Recurrent UTI Clinic provides specialist assessment and treatment options for adults experiencing recurring infections. The clinic aims to identify possible underlying causes and explore ways to reduce the risk of future infections.

Is this clinic for you?

The clinic is for adults who have had infections that keep returning. You may find it useful if:

  • Have had two or more infections in six months, or three or more in a year
  • Continue to experience infections despite repeated courses of antibiotics
  • Have been offered long-term, low dose antibiotics and would like to look at other options
  • Began experiencing more frequent infections around or after the menopause
  • Have not yet been assessed to understand why your infections keep returning

What happens at your first appointment

You will see a consultant urologist, a doctor who specialises in the urinary system, who will review your symptoms, medical history, previous infections and treatments. .

You may be asked for a urine sample on the day. Depending on what your consultant finds, you may be offered further tests: a scan to check that your bladder empties properly, blood tests, or in some cases a small camera test to look inside the bladder. These may carry an additional charge.

What treatment options are available?

There is no single treatment for recurrent UTIs, and what suits one person will not suit another. Depending on individual circumstances, options may include changes to daily habits, treatment of an underlying cause, hormonal treatment, preventative medicines or specialist treatments that support the body’s response to bacteria.

Some treatments can only be prescribed by a specialist following a thorough assessment. An appointment does not guarantee that particular treatment will be prescribed, and your consultant will recommend the most appropriate for you.

Can I refer myself?

Yes. You can book directly with our Urologist at the MSG, and does not need a GP referral. With your permission we will write to your GP after your appointment, so that your records stay complete and everyone involved in your care knows the plan.

How much does the service cost?

This is a private service. It is not covered by the Secondary Healthcare Contract with Health & Social Care. Tests and any treatment are charged separately, and we will always tell you what something costs before it goes ahead.

The first outpatient appointment costs £320, and the follow up outpatient consultation is £280.

If you have private medical insurance, check with your insurer before you book. Cover for preventative treatment varies between policies, and some policies do not cover unlicensed medicines.
