Dr Tom Saunders grew up in the Peak District before attending St George’s Hospital Medical School in London where he qualified in 2001. Following his appointment to the Royal College of Physicians in 2006 he underwent specialist training in Geriatric and General Medicine in London, Surrey and Sussex, then started work as a Consultant Physician in Worthing in 2012.
Before joining the MSG in 2020, Dr Saunders previously worked in a similar role in Western Sussex Hospitals where he was the lead for Community Geriatrics, optimising support to remain well within their own homes.
He has a passion for service improvement and education, playing an active role in the education, training and assessment of junior doctors. Dr Saunders regularly writes questions for their national speciality examinations and is an examiner on behalf of the Royal College of Physicians.
“I provide a holistic and realistic assessment of elderly frail patients but due to my experience and knowledge of general medicine I like the diagnostic challenges posed by all patients. Making what seems a small intervention makes a significance difference to the patient and their family. I enjoy getting to know my patients and hearing about their past and the lives they have lived.”
Dr Saunders’ interests outside working life include running, cycling and paddle boarding, as well as travelling to explore new places.
