Dr Ruth Copeland grew up in Guernsey, attending the Grammar School before undertaking her medical training at the University of Nottingham Medical School, graduating in 2010. Her postgraduate training was in the East Midlands and she was then appointed as a consultant geriatrician at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, one of England’s largest teaching hospitals.
She first developed her interest in geriatric medicine while working as a healthcare assistant at the PEH in Guernsey when she was a student. After working with many inspiring geriatricians during her early years in training she became a passionate advocate for providing high quality healthcare to older people.
Within geriatric medicine, her particular interests are in bone health/orthogeriatrics and surgical liaison where she can help to improve the care of older patients presenting to other specialties. She also has an interest in frailty where she can provide patient-centered care to vulnerable older people with the aim of helping them live well for longer.
Outside work she enjoys spending time with her husband and three small children and is looking forward to reconnecting with friends and family and experiencing all that Guernsey has to offer.
I really enjoy the challenge of managing complex multimorbidity in older people. I get a lot of job satisfaction from working collaboratively with patients and their families to find a pragmatic approach to treating long term conditions.
