Dr Clare Conroy joined the MSG in September 2024. She had completed studies in microbiology and biotechnology before studying medicine at Barts & The Royal London in 2002. She chose to specialise in anaesthesia after being inspired by the anaesthetists she met during an intensive care and anaesthetic rotation as part of her Foundation Programme.
During her anaesthetic training, she completed advanced training in obstetric anaesthesia and spent time in intensive care supporting critically ill patients during the Covid pandemic. In 2021, she took up a position as substantive consultant with a special interest in obstetric anaesthesia.
Dr Conroy became a fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2021 and was appointed as a substantive consultant at Wexham Park Hospital where she became the anaesthetic clinical lead for trauma surgery, helping improve care for patients with fractured femurs, and implementing teaching for surgical juniors.
She brings with her extensive experience in obstetric anaesthesia, having regularly undertaken labour ward and elective sessions and runs a high-risk obstetric clinic.
Dr Conroy is passionate about medical education and was previously both an educational supervisor and department lead for Anaesthetic Associate training.
"Often the anaesthetic can be the most frightening part of an operation for the patient. It is my job to build a rapport, support the patient and allay their fears, and being able to care for a patient from the first interaction in the pre-assessment clinic to the recovery room."
In her leisure time, Dr Conroy enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children, which include going to the beach and swimming. Since moving to Guernsey she has grown fond of gardening and growing her own vegetables. She also loves to read, especially period novels and crime thrillers.
