Ever wondered what it’s like to be a senior doctor working in a busy general hospital? We run our Taste of Medicine course at least twice a year for Guernsey (lower) sixth formers to suit the different work experience weeks of the Colleges and the Sixth Form Centre. The course offers a unique experience for students to gain first-hand experience of a career in medicine. Over the course of the week students are paired up and will attend around ten different sessions covering a range of outpatient clinics including anaesthetics, paediatrics and fracture clinic, as well as observing clinical wards, the emergency department, theatres and much more.
This course has received excellent feedback from those who have attended, with students highlighting key moments such as watching a baby being born via c-section and other various surgeries and experiences that have given them a glimpse into what life as a doctor looks like.
The Taste of Medicine course is also a great opportunity to seek advice from our doctors on topics such as applying to medical school, how to choose your specialty, and where medicine can take you.
The course has now finished for 2025. Dates for 2026 will be published later this year.
To apply, please speak to your school's career advisor who will provide you with the online application and relevant forms.
Please note that we can only accept students with predicted grades of three A’s or above, or the equivalent in International Baccalaureate (IB).
