Ever wondered what it’s like to be a senior doctor working in a busy general hospital? We run our popular Taste of Medicine course at least twice a year for Guernsey (lower) sixth formers to suit the different work experience weeks of the Colleges and the Sixth Form Centre, offering a unique experience for students to gain first-hand experience of a career in medicine.
We are happy to consider students attending other local colleges, as well as Guernsey residents studying outside the island (subject to capacity) should they be interested in pursuing a career in medicine. All applicants will be asked to provide a reference confirming that they are currently achieving, or are on track to achieve, the academic grades required for entry into medical school.
Our programme provides valuable exposure to real clinical environments and day-to-day medical practice. Over the course of the week students are paired up and will attend around ten different sessions covering a range of outpatient clinics such as anaesthetics, paediatrics and fracture clinic, as well as observing clinical wards, the emergency department, theatres, and more.
This course has received excellent feedback from those who have attended, with students highlighting key moments such as watching a baby being born via C-section and other various surgeries and experiences that have given them a glimpse into what life as a doctor looks like.
The Taste of Medicine course is also a great opportunity to seek advice from our doctors on topics such as applying to medical school, how to choose your specialty, and where medicine can take you.
The dates for this year's courses are -
Elizabeth, Ladies' and Blanchelande College: Monday 29 June – Friday 3 July
Sixth Form Centre: Monday 13 – Friday 17 July.
To apply, please speak to your school's career advisor who will provide you with the online application and relevant forms. Or email us at info@msg.gg.
Please note that we can only accept students with predicted A Level grades of three A’s or above, or the equivalent in International Baccalaureate (IB).
The application process will close on 31 March.
