Electromyography and nerve conduction studies that diagnose muscle and nerve disorders can now be carried out for patients at the Medical Specialist Group.
The service is initially for private patients, but the hope is that it will eventually be available to all patients. A total of 75 patients went to the UK under the States contract for these tests in 2023 at a cost of £33,800.
Dr Azad Esack, locum consultant neurologist, will conduct the tests.
Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) both help find out if you have a disorder of your muscles, nerves, or both. These tests can be done separately, but they are usually done at the same time.
An EMG looks at the electrical signals your muscles make when they are at rest and when they are being used. An NCS measures how fast and how well the body's electrical signals travel down your nerves.’
EMG and NCS can help diagnose neuromuscular diseases, such as primary muscle disease ,motor neurone disease, peripheral nerve dysfunction associated with diabetes nerve problems in the spine, such as a herniated disk and nerve problems elsewhere in the body, such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
