The Medical Specialist Group (MSG) has expanded its paediatric audiology service following the appointment of a new full-time audiologist, increasing capacity and continuity of care for islanders.
Amy Vermeulen has joined MSG’s audiology team, providing specialist care for patients under 18. In her role, Amy will assess and treat hearing loss using advanced testing and equipment, while supporting children and their families with advice on protecting and preventing further hearing deterioration.
Amy joins audiologist Stephen Ruddock, who became part of the team in 2024, meaning MSG's audiology service is now at full strength and well placed to meet patient demand.
Dr Farid Fouladinejad, Chief Executive of the MSG, said: “Amy is a fantastic addition to the team. Her appointment strengthens our audiology service and ensures patients continue to receive high-quality, consistent care.
“With Amy and Steve now working together alongside our excellent ENT consultants, we're well placed to meet islanders' need for accessible hearing care, and we're confident patients and their families will value the continuity of service the team provides.”
Amy trained at the University of Southampton, completing a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Science with a focus on audiology, before joining Portsmouth NHS Trust's Complex Adult and Paediatric Audiology team. There she undertook further specialist training in Vestibular Audiology, which involves diagnosing and treating balance disorders that can cause dizziness, vertigo and balance instability.
Amy said: “The range of knowledge and skill required is what first attracted me to audiology. I love that it's a specialty with such a wide scope, both in the patients you see and the clinical skills you use.
“The most fulfilling part is seeing the positive impact on patients' lives. No two clinics are the same because every patient has their own needs and goals. Having already fallen in love with Guernsey, I'm excited to develop my interest in paediatric audiology here on the island. Helping children with hearing problems is something that I find particularly rewarding.”
Outside of work, Amy has a strong interest in art, music and astronomy. Since moving to Guernsey, she has enjoyed sketching and painting the island's landscapes and attending live music events.
