Islander chosen to feature in charity calendar

17 November 2025

A local woman has been selected from thousands of people to feature in a charity calendar designed to raise funds and awareness for individuals living with a stoma.

Andrea Bewey, a receptionist at the Medical Specialist Group, will appear in the 2026 Ostomy Charity Calendar alongside 11 other individuals, each of whom lives with an ostomy.

The project aims to challenge stigma, promote confidence, and normalise life with a stoma. It was founded by ostomate Karen Ashman, ambassador for Footprints 2 Africa, and is supported by Vanilla Blush, an NHS-approved company specialising in stylish, discreet support wear for ostomy bags.

Andrea’s journey began at just 13 years old when she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. By the age of 16, she became critically ill and underwent a total proctocolectomy (removal of the colon and rectum), resulting in a permanent ileostomy.

‘Accepting my stoma was very hard at the time, I didn't even know stomas existed,’ said Andrea. ‘I went unconscious and woke up with a bag, who I named Fred. Today the stoma nurses provide fantastic support, but at that time there was no one in Guernsey who could support me, so I had to go it alone.

‘I am so grateful to be alive as my parents were told it was 50/50 chance that I would survive the operation as I had become so ill. I’ve just celebrated Fred's 48th birthday on 3rd November!’

When Andrea saw the advert for the calendar, she decided to apply, never expecting to be selected. ‘It has taken me completely out of my comfort zone,’ she said. ‘But if I can help just one person to deal with this condition it will all have been worthwhile. I have been very lucky. I married an amazing man, have a gorgeous daughter, brilliant son in law, two of the most beautiful grandchildren and have the best friends anyone could wish for.

‘The care provided locally by the stoma nurses on island is great. As a long term ostomate I manage most of my condition myself, but it’s good to know that the nurses are there if I need them.

Andrea has also recently celebrated 15 years of working at the group. ‘Taking a job at the MSG was the best thing I ever did. I have loved my time working here and have made lifelong friends.’

Consultant surgeon Mr Michael Van Den Bossche, who performs ostomy surgery locally says, ‘Ostomy surgery is life changing for every patient. After adapting to lifestyle changes and with good management and support, many people go on to live normal, full and active lives and can go back to doing activities they enjoyed before.

‘Andrea’s story is an inspiring example of resilience and positivity. Her willingness to share her experience will help others feel less alone and more empowered in managing their condition.’

All proceeds from the calendar sales will be donated to Footprints 2 Africa, a non-profit organisation which collects surplus ostomy supplies in the UK and sends them to under-resourced hospitals and ostomates in Africa, and the Ileostomy & Internal Pouch Association, another non-profit charity which provides support and advocacy to people who have undergone life-changing surgery.

The 2026 Ostomy Charity Calendars is £10 and can be purchased by contacting Karen Ashman directly through her Facebook page.
