The benefits of being a clinician at the MSG
Our healthcare model is different to and separate from the NHS. It’s a unique consultant-provided approach that offers high-quality medicine and continuity of care.
With greater involvement in direct patient care, and excellent working relationships with your fellow clinicians, you can make a big difference in our small community. It’s definitely the case that the more you put in, the more you get out.
The Princess Elizabeth Hospital, run by the States of Guernsey, has approximately 145 beds and strong clinical links to UK mainland centres, particularly Southampton University Hospital.
Around £100 million is being invested in an ambitious hospital modernisation programme over the next decade to future proof services and deliver the highest quality facilities for patients and staff alike.
Most consultants join us as associates and then - if all goes well - after a couple of years are invited to join our partnership. This gives you a stake in the group and enables you to be involved in key decisions.
To become an MSG consultant, you must hold higher qualifications as defined by your Royal College and be on the specialist register of the General Medical Council. Once you are appointed, you register with HSC (Health and Social Care) to practice in Guernsey.
Annual appraisals for MSG consultants are carried out by senior MSG or Southampton clinicians and there is a 360 appraisal (involving staff and patients) every five years. The responsible officer (currently the HSC’s medical director) reviews your performance and you are expected to maintain a programme of continuous professional development (CPD).
