Dr Gomes joined the Medical Specialist Group in 2000.
He trained as an undergraduate at the University of Southampton Medical School, where he qualified as a doctor in 1984.
Following a period working in Southampton, he completed a two-year registrar rotation in general and respiratory medicine in Leeds. He then joined the Medical Branch of the Royal Air Force, where he continued his specialist training through posts in Germany and Wroughton.
On completion of his general medical training, he spent three years at Charing Cross Hospital in London, undertaking advanced training in Medical Oncology (the medical treatment of cancer).
Prior to coming to Guernsey, he was a Consultant at the Royal Hospital Haslar in Gosport, where he was involved in establishing the Cancer Unit there and was Consultant Oncologist for all three Services.
He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of both London and Edinburgh, is on the Specialist Register of the GMC and is a Member of the Association of Cancer Physicians, the European Society of Mastology and the European Society of Medical Oncology.
Since joining the Medical Specialist Group, Dr Gomes has been instrumental in the development of the Cancer Unit in Guernsey and he continues to have strong links with the Cancer Centre in Southampton, where he holds an honorary consultant appointment.
His particular interests include the management of breast, lung and urological cancers, in addition to haematological malignancy and general oncology. He is a Trustee of the Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief.
