Mr Richard Vowles joined the MSG in 1999. He trained as a doctor at Guy’s Medical School in London and following graduation in 1989, he did his general surgical training in a number of London hospitals before deciding to specialise in Ear, nose and throat surgery.
His ENT training included time at some of the leading academic centres in the UK and incorporated all aspects of the specialty, but with emphasis on the management of head and neck cancer.
Mr Vowles has also developed a special interest in facial plastic surgery and the management of skin cancers around the face, with particular expertise in the removal of tumours using lasers.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of The British Association of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, a member of the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery and is on the faculty of training courses in Southampton and at the Royal College of Surgeons.
Mr Vowles has forged links with centres in Southampton and London to secure the best care for head and neck cancer in Guernsey but he remains a true generalist and practises all aspects of the specialty, including endoscopic sinus surgery and functional and cosmetic rhinology.
Outside work, he is a keen walker and cyclist, a car enthusiast, has a private pilot’s licence and enjoys wildlife photography and cooking, particularly Indian food.
“I chose ENT because of its variety - from very young to very old patients, and a range of procedures from the smallest operations to some of the biggest and most challenging. It’s a cliché but saving lives is very rewarding!”
